That broad era and style for me will always end up in me replaying the first Lloyd Cole album. Soundtrack to a golden era. Oddly, the best track on the album isn't on the album, or indeed feature Mr Cole or his Commotions. Best cover version in the whole history of popular music? Got to be a contender: |

The Kylie song was instantly forgettable (if I’d ever heard it before, I had forgotten it). Unpopular opinion: The Stone Roses are one of the most overrated and over-romanticised bands ever. |

F*ck me, Greppers, that’s awful, she’s taken a great song and removed all the life and wit from it. It’s up there with that awful cover of Mad World that makes the song last 5 weeks for no good reason. Er, have we gone off-topic? |

[Anyway, Sinead O’Connor has best cover version sewn up for all eternity.]

I love the Amos version. It's a really patchy album though (Strange Little Girls). Her version of Happiness IAWG is even worse than the original. And a sneeze under ten minutes long. |

[If it's that 'Prince' cover by O'Connor, it comes across as an oversentimental dirge. Not a popular view, I'll grant you.]
