I feel sure some figures like these help explain why you can smell so quickly when someone has farted even if you are upwind of them, but my maths and statistics are not up to it.

So about the same velocity Wriggler, would be my assumption. It may of course be 'propelled' with a high initial velocity and subsequently slow down (although > 300m/s would be pretty impressive)

An O2 molecule at STP will have about 7 billion collisions per second based on the above figures. If molecules were able to travel in straight lines without colliding so often, I guess we'd smell the fart before we heard it.
