An oxygen molecule in a room at STP has a velocity of about 300 m/s but on the other hand its mean free path is about 0.1 microns. I feel sure some figures like these help explain why you can smell so quickly when someone has farted even if you are upwind of them, but my maths and statistics are not up to it.

I thought Oxygen was odourless, hydrogen sulphide less so, any data on that substance?

Mass of H2S molecule and O2 molecule pretty much the same (34 v 32). So about the same velocity Wriggler, would be my assumption.

It may of course be 'propelled' with a high initial velocity and subsequently slow down (although > 300m/s would be pretty impressive)

I'd say, it could cause take off, but it's nowhere near escape velocity.

Escape velocity from earth is about 11 km per second, although about 7km per second is enough to put you in space (but still under the influence of Earth's gravity.)

An O2 molecule at STP will have about 7 billion collisions per second based on the above figures. If molecules were able to travel in straight lines without colliding so often, I guess we'd smell the fart before we heard it.

I've not seen in him on House of Games, Pointless, Only Connect or Uni Challenge, do you think he's a Uni Challenge type?

Maybe he's been a question, but tend I switch off when it's celebs< TV or film based.
