That "sandshoe" or "sand shoe", an alternative name for plimsoll (or plimsole), is not used everywhere in the UK. But it is used in Australia and New Zealand.

It seems to be only used in the north east of England, and possibly Scotland.

Yes, black daps with elastic gussets were never anything but sandshoes when I was at school.

For me a sandshoe would have been a lace-up proto-trainer. Plimsolls were "gutties".

Anyone saying "plimsole" at my school would've got battered for being English. I wonder if that's why Graeme Obree had such a bad time in the Irvine Valley. I've never gone for his tale of being bullied because his dad was the polis.
