When I was at school we had a handball court in our gym as well as the usual badminton, volleyball and basket ball facilities. We even had a baseball diamond. Our school was just a bog-standard comprehensive but we had an enthusiastic PE teacher who was American/Polish.

I agree though there are only three sports (Football/Rugby/Cricket) plus running.

This en.wikipedia.org

I have known it in the past, but not recently until it was dredged up in a conversation with my daughter today.

That running and cycling races go anti-clockwise, but Grand Prix go clockwise.

Actually this isn't something I *know*, as in it's an actual fact, but something I noticed this morning when hubby was watching some motor racing.

Is this actually true?

(If you tell a group of children to run round the hall, they always run anticlockwise)

Some f1 circuits are clockwise and some anti. Not really sure if there is a logic to it or they build them specifically to run one way or the other or something else.

Athletics used to run clockwise sometimes too. Some places tended to run one way and some the other. As things became standardised this was lost but as recently as the 1950's it was common to see races run clockwise in some places.

Wonders if it is 'more natural' to run anti if right footed, hmmmmm.

Kjt, there was a thread or poll (can't remember which) on Fetch at some point, asking which way round most people's standard runs were. I've got a feeling anti-clockwise won, but that could well be complete nonsense.

That I won't be going away over New Year after all. :-(
