That inguinal hernias in babies commonly go away by themselves before the age of two.

Or that we have a surgical registrar on the patch who's losing his marbles.

My son had an inguinal hernia Vrap it did go by itself but not till after he started school as it was quite severe. The doctor was reluctant to operate (as was I) and he was just monitored by myself and the GP had a quick look if we ever visited. There's absolutely no sign of it now :-)

A severe inguinal hernia? Blimey! Does that mean it was getting strangulated and going gangrenous and stuff?

ooops vrap just googled inguinal hernia brain is still asleep. My sones was intestinal hernia but popped out round his belly button. Doctor did say if it didn't correct itself by time he was a teenager he could have the op as it would be difficult for him to wear dress trousers and he would be old enough to make a decision himself by then. The area was probably 3 to 4 times the size of his belly button and would regularly pop quite far and was quite disturbing :-(

Aye, umbilical hernias in babies, even gigantic ones, almost always disappear in time and I've never seen one strangulate. My lad had one as well, but by the time he went to school he just had a bit of an outie, which he still has.

I had a strangulated [inguinal] hernia when I was a few weeks old and it was pretty serious. Until I read ^^^^^^^^ I didn't know that the mostly get better.

They don't, Winded! I was gobsmacked to discover that the parents of a baby with an inguinal hernia had been told by a senior trainee surgeon that it would "fix itself" (by the age of two, according to the letter said surgeon sent me). I think he may have been getting confused with an umbilical hernia, which this particular tot doesn't have.
