Bringing out my inner cynic too.

Not a marathon runner, but..... DeeGee I would be loathe to cough up for a commercial outfit with what seem to be sketchy plans and limited track record in organising running only races. If a local club with decent infrastucture who I had seen at races/marshalling at parkrun etc. were trying to set up something local and wanted me to take a punt by putting a fiver in the pot towards an entry so they could get a new event off the ground, that would be an entirely different proposition.

Maybe one of our clever business people will be along to be all strategic but if you went through clubs etc. that sounds more achievable. Maybe there's some good will in the community that could work in your favour.

They would take three quid off you up front for the fun run already. Outrageous! Kids don't plan ahead like this. Never heard of that before.

Grrrr.

Not that I would enter (it's a marathon! although they are offering a half as well) and there are quite a lot of things which set off alarm bells like: "A charity fundraising event, as well as a great excuse for you, your family, your pets and all your friends to have a giggle".

but...

They look like a group who have experience in organising events, albeit not running events. And people would like something like this, if it was properly organised? And there is quite a long lead time to the projected date (although asking for actual money at this stage seems a bit ... optimistic). Maybe somebody could reach out to them, either a local club, or individually and say "we like your basic idea, however..." Form a partnership, perhaps.

You need a course, permission from the local authorities to use that course and about 12 months to sort out the final details, unless it's a track marathon in which case you need runners with a really high boredom threshhold and hips which aren't going to complain much about going round and round in circles.

Not that I bothered answering the question. So: Strathearn Harriers organised a new marathon last year. They floated the idea (on Fetch amongst other places) gauged that there would be sufficient interest and then as far as I am aware had thing pretty much all organised before opening entries.

On the day, it seems it could hardly have gone better. Lots of happy runners. On again this year, if you fancy it: strathearnharriers.org.uk

To be fair to the organisers they do appear to have already organised other "running only" events (http://www.organicadventure.co.uk/eventscat.aspx?ec=OA+MM+Run+3hr), although not road races before this.

Sorry I phrased that badly. They have organised running only events but they seem to be more orienteering in nature that following set, marshalled courses. But I'll apologise again if I've misunderstood that bit too!

LF - although I quoted you, my comment wasn't meant directly at you as others had made similar comments, sorry, just to offer a little balance for those who haven't clicked the link. I also understand their running events experience to be orienteering style events.
