We have Netflix, but I pay for it. Raffo has just received this brilliantly hopeless scam from 'netflix' (HQ apparently now in Peru). It really is the pits!

'It is critical that you check the status of your payment very away to make sure everything is in order. Bad things might happen, but you shouldn't freak out about it since anything can happen. There will be no more problems accessing Netfli𝚡 for you when you have triumphed over these obstacles.'

Have you received any hilariously dreadful scams recently? Do share!

May the peace of God be with you and your family. I know it will be a great surprise reading from me today but consider this a divine intervention as a pastor explained to me. My name is Mrs. Deborah Grant, a widow from the United States Of America Married in Turkey, and am writing to you from my sick bed because I have been fighting cancer and the doctor says I have only a few weeks left. I want to entrust my money (USD 8.5 million) to your care for charity purposes to help the less privileged as my late husbands' relatives want me dead so that they will claim all my late husband and I worked for. I will tell you more about myself and what you need to do with the money once you receive it. Please write to me soon as my health is pretty bad and my doctor says I will be moved to the intensive care unit anytime soon. Have a blessed day and please pray for me. God bless you.

Yours Mrs. Deborah Grant

Sadly, 'they'make these first contact messages deliberately poor, to filter out the marks who might get wise before they've been fully ripped off.
If someone is tricked by what most would consider an obvious scam, then the scammers know they'll probably be able to take them for the full ride.

It also means that any real person who gets as far as reading such a message probably doesn't have the best security set up (or it would have detected the spam and hived it off into a holding space), and will therefore be more susceptible to malware.

I wouldn't be surprised by if there's also, also, an element of relying on people who see it as an obvious scam not bothering to report it to anyone, as the potential victims think it's too obvious for anyone to fall for and too unlikely any authorities would do anything about it.

I’ll have to look to see if 419 baiters/eaters are still going, they were always fun to watch.
419 is the Nigerian penal code number for the advanced fee scam. 419 baiters deliberately engage with the scammers to wind them up over a period of time.

The Nigerian fraud scam has been around for ages. Amazing how scammers think that their chances of success will improve if they just change the nationality.

I was kind of hoping for new, short, funny ones like my Netflix example at the top of the page. As SP notes versions of the Nigerian one have been around for ages - I havent had one of those for years. Actually I haven’t had any email scams for as long as I remember. Texts, yes, but they’re not funny - can be ’almost’ convincing, so I always check out and report.
