Smokers should be allowed to have one smoking pub in every town.

Smoking should be banned in all public spaces. Smoking should not be allowed indoors when children are in the house. People should not be allowed to smoke within 2 metres of a neighbouring property. Impossible to enforce the latter two, I know.

Angus - if that meant they weren’t all hanging round the entrance of all the other pubs, I’d vote for that.

I also regret that smoking is banned in places I don't want to pass through, like pubs, but permitted in places I do want to pass through, like the pavement outside pubs.

There should be a causal link and a minimum risk level before health scares can be published in non-specialist press

Perfectly reasonable, Maclennane.
The ultimate reason for the ubiquity of the smoking ban is the risk to the health, and consequent legal action, of the staff of pubs et cetera. The first legal case by a child against its smoking parents will put the kibosh on smoking in the presence of children.

Smokers should be allowed to make up their own mind whether to smoke in their own houses and cars, irrelevant of whether any kids are present.
Less nanny state please.
For clarity, I'm a recently (2 years) ex-smoker of 30 years.
