It was relatively 'easy' pace but this weekend was run harder.

Just stalked your races! 20 mins outside your PB? That's pretty good pace. I was about same - 22 mins outside my PB and it felt hard. Prob too hard. When you did your back to backs, that was 40 mins outside your PB - did that feel easier? THanks for your input, :-)G

I think doing races during your training is OK, but you have to decide on your target race and treat any other race as a training run. This year the fling is my goal, the d33 will just be a training run, and if you see me running fast, trip me over

HappyG the double was two weeks before the single. And yes the double felt easier.

I tend to think that if your taregt is a 'race' rather than just a finish then racing in training is not only beneficial but probably more or less essential. Hence me doing a couple of park runs last autumn for next weekend's Grizzly

I posted this on the minimalist runners thread too, but I'd really like as many suggestions as possible...
Can anybody suggest a shoe for a 69 mile ultra, about 75% on tarmac?
I'm doing this in about 6 weeks, and currently am having some problems with my achilles, running in 6mm drop f-lites (the shoes I planned to wear). I have a pair of trailroc 255s which I could use, but they will need repairing; I bought a replacement pair but they aren't as comfortable as the old ones.
I have wide feet / bunions so am a bit limited in my choice. Do I stay low drop (well, 6mm), go maximal, buy Hokas... suggestions?
Oddly, my achilles were at their worst a couple of weeks ago, but they didn't complain when I did the Highland Fling in the old trailrocs - but that was nearly all off-road.
I was thinking about road Kinvaras, but with a 4mm drop they may make my achilles worse.

Hokas are also 4mm-5mm drop, so if you're worried about your achilles they may not be the best........
If you're looking for something about 8mm - 9mm, with reasonable cushioning, but a bit more protection than a pure road shoe, then how about something like the New Balance Leadville 1210 ( 8mm ), or maybe the Inob8 Roclite 315 ( 9mm ) which is the most cushioned of the Inov8 range ?
If you want even higher drop, then maybe Salomon XT Wings ?
I'm sure there are suitable ones in the Brooks, Mizuno, etc ranges as well, but don't really know these makes.

Thanks Gus, I might have a look at the Leadvilles.
I've just sent a pair of Salomons (Sense Mantra) back as they were too narrow, so I'm assuming my feet aren't compatible with Salomon.
I'm as familiar as you with brooks et al! I can't quite bring myself to look at the more maximal shoes (I usually wear inov8s), but I think I may have to.
