I like Shot Bloks, but since I only use them for psychological support I've switched to normal sweeties for wallet pain reasons ;)

I always plan to use gels on the bike, but almost never do. Gu and Accel-Gel are my preference (and I'd happily use Torq) because the extraneous gubbins in them is all stuff I know I can tolerate. In theory I like Clif gels, but I find them highly unpalatable.

I used Torq gels on the UTMB, got through about 20 of them before they started tasting like glue :-)

Shot Bloks are about the only "sports nutrition" I will use. Well about from Tim Taylors for rehydration (obvs)

Rightly or wrongly (and ironically because im proper old school with Imperial vs Metric) ultras start at c 50 K for me. 27s and 28s are mis-measured marathons basically. The Howarth Hobble fits in with that as does the Tour of Bradwell and the Calderdale Hike. Are they ultra, fell races (Bradwell is tough!) or scout hikes?

30 miles for me DT, but agree 27/28 are badly measured marathons :)

We 'ran' a 28 mile marathon the weekend before in about 9 hours, but it did include a cafe stop for paninis and milk shakes, and a National Trust stop for tea and cider.

Maybe anything that includes a stop for cream teas or alcohol should default to being an ultra?

M_N, no, it just means you need to learn to run the racing line :).

19 mile "ultra" for us a couple of weeks ago included a trip to Greggs in Skipton and ice-creams at Bolton Abber :-)
