I never understood Newbury.
Chelmsford wants to be Cambridge - it’s an easy commute from London, it’s flat, it’s overrun with students, and the property prices can make your eyes bleed.
Newbury, from my limited experience, wants to be Swindon.

I always thought Newbury wanted to be Oxford. Swindon wants to be Newbury. Slough wants to be Swindon. I’m not sure what wants to be Slough. Reading probably fits in there too, but I’m not sure where.

Surely Slough wants to be bombed? It is not fit for people now.

Bombing a place that looks like it’s been bombed is a waste of bombs, surely.

Oh it doesn’t. I really don’t understand Hemel. It seems to want people to think it’s a new town. Which is plain weird.

Thetford is another odd place trying to make an inexplicable journey to being a new town. Parts of it are old and nice, but it seems to be disowning them for sprawling industrial/retail parks and Barrett home estates.
