In Germany, getting the Holy Trinity of biblically wet, cold and windy. It’s been disgusting all week, disgusting all day and is forecast to be disgusting all day tomorrow. All in all I’m pretty fed up with it. |

NDP. Back from church camp, via Brussels fair city where I caught up with my watermelon crushing friend Kort, and just in time to watch yr bechgen cochion trounce the saes in a very satisfying manner. Maybe the world cup won't be a wash out after all. |

Just saw some TV coverage about that. I hope it's not a H&S overreaction by the UK leaders. First, and clearly most importantly for us, Jamie (or FlyingScotsman, as some of us know him) and Kirsten are both fine. They’re gutted to be taken from the field but have no choice. There’s 4 adult leaders with our kids and their 34 friends from East Scotland, all of whom we vetted and were happy to trust with our kids. Moreover, Jamie's one of the patrol leaders and, to be honest, I’d prefer him over many others to turn up when the going gets rough. By all accounts he’s been as good as I expected him to be. We had comms overnight (8-hour time difference). He says the site was ok but ablutions less so. Some units suffering but not theirs. All members of our Unit are fit and well because of good hygiene and rigorous discipline; apparently others were more cavalier and might be paying the price. Overall, it doesn’t sound like an overreaction by UKC. The conditions are extremely difficult (and reminiscent of stuff I encountered a few previous lives ago). But the crew are teenagers (not squaddies), children, and you can't be too careful when you’re looking after other folk's kids. Subsequently the USA and Singapore have also withdrawn their units. The "party line" (and it isn’t mad) is that: as the single largest contingent, if UK withdraws it will significantly reduce the impact on the site, ant therefore the hope is that those left will enjoy a better time*. *[Clearly this is an attempt to codify the obvious. However, it’s nice of them to try to make the rest feel better about being left behind! 😉 ] My huge annoyance with the scumbag Press is them using such emotive and sensational language trying to make a story to sell papers (or "clicks" these days). |

Glad they are OK Si. Thanks for updating us. Sorry that they are not getting the experience they had planned and saved for.

Thanks Linds. We’re all agreed that the experience is unique, and therefore worthwhile. If it’s not what you expected then that breeds resilience and flexibility. Ultimately you can attribute loads of words and feelings but the bottom line is: they’re on the other side of the world experiencing a great holiday with some lovely friends supervised by some dedicated and skilful leaders. We’re looking forward to hearing their stories for weeks after they return. |

We went beach. Now it’s lashing it down and we’re feeling a wee bit smug.
