I confidently predict there will be no gilets on show at my running club tonight.

That's because you live somewhere that takes it seriously. When I started 'competing' in the West Midlands it was all unemployed former foundry workers wearing vests and racing shorts - plus hobnail boots.

No foundry workers at our club. In DH Lawrence country it is all ex miners, turned to game keeping when the pits shut, who now live only for running, whippets, gravy and knobbing the Land owners wife up against a tree.

My great grandfather was a gamekeeper. He died before I could ask him about the knobbing.

He would have learnt that on day two at game keeper school. Day one, registration and ferrets. Day two, knobbing posh birds.

The chap who won the cross country race on Sunday wasn't wearing a gilet. Strictly vest and short shorts. I suspect there might have been gilet wearers behind me.

I've got one of those ones where you can (allegedly) see the race number through the mesh, but I only ever warm up in it, simply because they are a bastard when you're marshalling/timekeeping.
Good evening dear friends and fellow travellers on the road to enlightenment. I've been yoga, and home via the Chelmer to drink tea.
