And an extraordinary performance by Froome - no insinuations intended.

Surely we can discount an LA "record"?

We can. But whenever the analysis of climb times/power outputs is done, the comparisons with the dark days of cycling are inevitable. The performances of that era are greatly above what should be possible by (our current understanding of) clean human physiology and so if people approach those performances it raises questions. There is no absolute limit that we know of and as others have suggested there are a number of variables to take into account.

Which leaves Roberto Laiseka as the fastest, a genuine climber, Basque rider for Euskatel and I don't remember him being linked to doping scandals, indeed he features in the top 10 clean tours, if you remove names tainted by doping as this guy has done here: cypresstrees.blogspot.it although this link hints his name should be removed also - not sure why: weightweenies.starbike.com

Those lists contain a number of utterly filthy riders. I'm pretty convinced Boardman won the '96 tour for starters. Anyone on a Spanish or Italian team in the 90s can be written out of the results. Chiapucci is on those lists and he was on the Carrera team and was a known Conconi test subject. JF Bernard was riding for Banesto and they were systematically charging. |

Shame we have to talk about drugs immediately after the first mountain stage.

I was just thinking that. I shall desist. And not post anymore links to power analysis.

More like shame they doped for so long. Ignoring it doesn't mean it didn't or doesn't happen, and ignoring it was probably what led to it going on for so long. Anyway, I need to catch the highlights as I've been busy all day but kept up with the action via the CN tour tracker. Froome is a monster. And from those stats posted, was Froome better or the others worse than before. Will be interesting to see Contador outputs over the three weeks vs previous years. |

Teaboy, I hope you can provide similar analysis for Bolt, Mo Farah et al. (Well, maybe not Al). Cycling was (some argue still is) riddled with doping, and continues to be the "go to" sport for a juicy story. It's a bit unfair, seeing as Murray's quarter-final opponent lost two sets in a row, took a "toilet break", then came back and started knocking Murray all over the court. I wish having a pee had that effect on my performance. |

Also, I think Contador is riding at his normal level, i.e; not beefed up.
