I sometimes drop by the site just to glance at the forums etc without logging in. Recently I've noticed one of those popups that appear in the middle of the screen. These things are a blight on the interwebs and I reckon they don't increase traffic or custom, they just annoy. My usual response when encountering one is simply to close the page.

I think it detracts from this rather excellent site. Or is it just me?

I'm always logged in automatically, so I've never seen this. I don't think Fetch can control this, though.

You mean this one?

Yeah - I hate sites like twitter / instagram etc where I don't have an account and can't see anything because of a popup blocking me, trying to force me to sign up, so I just never look at them.

To be honest Fetch, I had never seen it so doesn't annoy me - I thought from the original post it was talking about a rogue google ad or something.

Do you have an idea of how many click through it to make an account verses just close it automatically - if it generates enough new members then I don't see an issue with keeping it.

It really hasn’t occurred to me that registered users might want to look at the forum anonymously - this really is aimed at the people who arrive fresh on the site. I’m not sure how I can resolve it just now.

It’s relatively new (like maybe a week). I used to have a block within the page (that would push the main content down) encouraging anonymous users to sign up.

So far, I think it’s produced a reasonable amount of sign ups, but I was going to give it a couple of weeks before looking at the numbers.

Well, I just dropped by again without being logged in and there the bloody thing was again! I guess I could just leave myself logged in.

It's up to The Man to decide what to do with or about it. Whatever he decides I'll go with, although I do reserve the right to grumble a little :-)

There's a cookie that stops it coming back - and that was set to last 1 minute - so I've increased it to 10 minutes, which should reduce the amount of annoyance it causes. I've also included a 'sign in' link on the popup too, as I thought that would offer a quick way for users with accounts to get signed in.
