That's surprising that it's changed hands that recently.

Ah! It is leased to the Skiddaw House Foundation until 2027 (for a peppercorn rent).
So its future as a hostel is assured for some years to come, presumably as long as it can atrtract wardens and customers.

Ros - I've just had a flick through the book and it appears that it was initially built as a gamekeeper's lodge by Lord Egremont, he owned nearly everything in the vicinity at the time. He was certainly a wealthy landowner!

That's on the route of the Grand Tour of Skiddaw race isn't it? I did think it looked a bit inaccessible

Yes, that's right - the Cumbria Way goes pretty much straight past Skiddaw House. A few months back I was running down there and the entire trail was sheet ice, fell on my arse with an almighty crash. Still got the bruises

I've never stayed there, always wanted to though.
Don't they do a "Skiddaw House Challenge" run? That was something else that I wanted to do, can't remember the route but it's a bit like the Castle Crag challenge they do from Borrowdale YHA - do it whenever you like and your name gets added to the list.
