Lucky the helicopters have got easy access to water, but it's really worrying how dry it is everywhere. (Mr SD has been up Hindscarth today ... another unusually dry walk!).

A good walk for me yesterday. Parked at Seatoller.. up Base Brown ( that’s a first for me) Green Gable/ Great Gable and down to the Honister mine via Brandreth and Grey Knotts. Cold coke at the ‘Skycafe’ and then down the Pass to the car. Loved it.

Well.. loved it except the descent off Great Gable. I’ve tried descending to Windy Gap before and that was no fun, so tried coming off the north side yesterday.. better ...but is there actually an easy route off GG?
Any suggestions appreciated.

None, from me. Sad to say but I've only been to the summit of Great Gable once, and it was an out and back from Windy Gap.
When I did a variation of the Ennerdale Horseshoe I used Moses Trod (bypassing Great Gable) and then ascended Kirk Fell from Beck Head.

I was on Brandreth yesterday too. A nice trot along the north ridge of Ennerdale. didn't go all the way round though.

The Buzzy one put together a tremendous kind-on-the-knees route today after I vaguely suggested Swirl How and avoiding the Old Man

RE - as it happens, I have very recent experience (as does SimonF) of descents off Great Gable and I think I can probably help you here
I assume your "normal" descent is via that awful series of rock steps that constitutes the tourist path? OK going up, but as you say pretty slow-going in descent. I do hope I'm not giving away some sacred fell-runners' lore in divulging this, but the most effective way off Great Gable's summit down to Windy Gap is via what's known as the Borrowdale Race Descent. From the summit, go on a bearing of about 55 degrees across the plateau until you pick up a distinct and rocky trod, this swings around roughly to the east and drops sharply, eventually becoming grassy is more or less parallel to the main tourist path up from Styhead. Hold your nerve (and keep your studs in contact with terra firma) until you see a distinct rocky "platform", this is your marker to turn sharply left - to the north - and you will join an obvious traverse that straddles the eastern face of the mountain. it joins the regular tourist patch down to the col at Windy Gap. It's straightforward and not dangerous, but the descent is steep and you'll want to be wearing your good studs Now, if you want to know the fast way down to Beck Head ...... that's a bit more of an issue. SimonF might have some interesting pictures to post that illustrate this fine Lake District descent
