I don't think we truly know the extent of the hole we are in do we? Brexit is becoming death by a thousand cuts on top of everything else that is hitting the economy. Savings have been doing really well, however. I suspect the pandemic "winners" will do really well and the losers will be in dire straits, because any govt largesse will dry up pretty quickly once the recovery starts - whenever that is. Twas ever thus. |

I still think Patel is a decent EW bet for next PM. And if you think that's impossible I will simply say "Donald J Trump".

I think Patel has the hard right policy positions to strongly "excite" a significant number of the Tories members who vote for a leader.

The Death penalty and similar illiberal positions on immigration for example.

Back on the UK moving on after Brexit....seems our environmental standards are about to drop more: theguardian.com "Ministers will be able to approve the import of animal and agricultural products of a lower standard than currently permitted in the UK, after attempts to amend the trade bill failed. The government has repeatedly vowed not to allow the import of chlorinated chicken and hormone-treated beef, but has refused to sign those pledges into law." Although not said, it could also go further to include carcinogenic cosmetics/hairsprays/soaps and household items (the US have many chemicals in this area that is banned in the EU) |

Yes fozzy when she recently said she was on for closing the border back last March a number of wags pointed out that she'd wanted to close the border ever since she first got the job!

I saw something (likely NewsThump) that said Patel has wanted to close the border since shortly after her parents were allowed through...

I think a Patel PM would see me looking v seriously at moving abroad. And death penalty a very large red line.

There's only so far that diversity will stretch in the Tory shires. Think Blazing Saddles...
