Hahaha. Sorry. Dead, disgusting finds are rather part and parcel of dogs.
I won't tell you about the person I know whose spaniel climbed *inside* a dead seal... don't worry a labrador would just have eaten it.

I thought I was going to lose a finger this morning to Arlo, the little s@@@. Runs back to me on the walk, crunching away. Managed to get it out his mouth but because both my hands were around his mouth, he picked it back up. Then wouldn't let me try again.
I think it was a bone of some sort. He crunched away until he could swallow it.

So far not had any truly disgusting incidents with Albie (7 months).
He’s getting good at playing fetch with the ball. We do sit/down with kibble in between and so he’s got good at bringing the ball back and dropping it.
If he gets hold of something he shouldn’t I’ve learned to do a swap for food which mostly works well (probably wouldn’t for something dead and disgusting but we’ve not had to try that yet!).

With the rabbit I was close to home and I walked him back through the village carrying this rabbit that was almost as big as him. Slow brought his food bowl with a sachet of wet food and some sausages out of the house and then we just about managed a swap. 😂 He tried to eat the wet food so damn fast so he could pick the rabbit up again.
The pheasant... I ended up dangling him by the harness until he got tired and let go! 😂😂 Then I carried him a little bit further and put him on the lead for half a mile.
Hugo Sprollie just despairs. He's a good boy and wouldn't dream of not dropping something when told.
To be honest I don't play fetch with them because it winds them up and they end up injured (we do do controlled retrieves but not fetch as a game) but Oscar Spaniel is obsessed with tennis balls so having one about my person for disgusting dead things incidents is probably a good idea.

Ralph-springer used to carry huge rabbits home, but was happy to drop them on the doorstep (he didn't find them, he caught them!) half eaten manky bits of rabbit or pheasant, however were much more high value and harder to stop him eating. Bouncing his ball off his nose worked if I was quick enough to grab the yucky thing whilst he was distracted by the ball.

walking across the green, between families with small children, with a dog proudly carrying his catch was so embarrassing though

Jess is so pathetic. She ain't never caught a rabbit - or anything come to that. She likes to CHASE almost anything but loses interest if fox, rabbit, squirrel or whatever dives for cover.
Sticks, however, are high value.
