What’s that VJ? It looks a bit like the Dutch shuffleboard game Sjoelbak, but with a launcher!

It’s call pucket. You and an opponent start with 8 pieces each and you just keep shooting them through the hole until one of you ends up with no pieces left. You don’t take it in turns - you just keep going.

Played first game of Everdell with Mrs VJ last night. It's probably the most we've ever spent on a single game, but you only have a birthday once a year. Hopefully having a birthday when playing games is the only thing you can do for weeks on end is a once in a lifetime experience! Anyway, we really enjoyed it. Still not much the wiser about tactics - we got to the final count up the points phase with neither of us having given points much thought! Mrs VJ loved all the little pieces and characters. Could have been made a lot cheaper with resource cards (like Catan) rather than little sticks and berries etc - but it is a lovely looking game.

I wondered whether you would have any games for your birthday. This looks interesting!

Played it for a second time the other day and it was a very different game to the first one - because of the cards that were on offer. Still a good game, but very different. Tactics are going to have to change based on the cards currently on offer.

Played an old favourite yesterday evening. Should probably think about a new table cloth if I intend to go into games photography in a big way :)

It's Quirkel! We love it too, a simple concept but good fun.

You each have 6 pieces, and you have to place pieces in a line so that lines of one colour but different shapes, or lines of one shape but different colours are created - scoring points for each line you add to. Bonus points for completing a line of 6. Keep going until all the tiles are used up, highest score wins.

We finally finished our first game of Scythe on Monday (spurred on by needing the dining table back for the kids to do school work). It was a good game. I enjoyed it, my lad was enjoying it until he got beaten on the last move, but now he’s had time to reflect he’s keen again. MrsC likes it a lot more now that she’s the inaugural winner! Littlest is ambivalent.

It’s quite slow to start, but speeds up quite quickly towards the end. Strategy will need to be changed when you change teams as all have different strengths and weaknesses. There’s quite a lot to learn, but it’s been fun.

I would give it 4/10 for ease of getting going, 7/10 for enjoyment and 9/10 for potential to be played a number of times without getting repetitive.

Next! :)
