May I follow Jac's comment with a plug for Start Fitness in The North - they are a reliable source of mail order spikes of all lengths from 'negligible' to 'improbable' for very few pennies.

Who was that directed at? My Mudclaw 300 Os rate a 3 month non-running break after a horrible blister accident. Mudroc 280s, though...

It is probably worth a trip to Decathlon in Stockport as they have a few there. You could even try a pair of own brand ones

I have Mudlcaw 270s and I rate them VERY highly! I don't like spikes for the terrain we do our cross country on, as it is pretty much fell running territory, VERY hilly with lots of rock and hardpack...

I know this has probably come up before but I cant bear to trawl.
Are there rules for spike length for children running cross country?
No. 1 son is racing this week and want to order today for swift delivery.
Are 9s ok or can we go for 12s?

Was discussing this at the CBTT yesterday, FarmBoy and another 33 minute 10K man both said no to Spikes, FarmBoy uses Walshes, I droned on about my new X-Talons I bought specifically for the Gwent League - last year in my first XC race I noticed that in Terroc 330s I was beating people in spikes who I normally never get near on the road due in no small part to me being able to use the odd path here and there they had to avoid.

He'll be running solely off road for the majority of races, so spikes are not the issue, just length

NR (sorry if I have spike sizes mixed up but it hopefully makes sense)

I can't remember what length the spikes are that come free with the shoe- I would advise getting the next size up from the default length. Mainly because it helps with grip and also allows for a bit of wearing down and then the spikes are still very useable.

If 12mm are the longest ones (and this really applies only to the longest spikes you can get) they are probably only useful for frozen courses- you can wear them for normal courses but you just end up with a load of mud on your shoe.

One possible problem of having longer spikes is (I have done this!) gashing your other leg with the spike when turning corners sharply/plus a combination of being tired etc. Just a scratch really but it could be worse if not careful, you could always put a shorter spike near the inner of the shoe-most of the grip comes running on the outside of your foot anyway.
