good thinking...

Are your spikes are the same (shoe) size as your normal trainers?

Mrs Funkin
My spikes are half size smaller than my road shoes (same brand) and they fit well. The problem with spikes is that there is nothing to them, for want of a better description. There's no motion control/stability/cushioning...I normally have a stability shoe and definitely run differently in my spikes. Bearing in mind that most XC races are relatively short, the lack of motion control etc. aren't really noticeable (to me at least). Too busy watching out for rabbit holes and quagmires to worry about motion control ;)

I run the x-country races in my fell shoes: Inov8 Mudrocs... would never be able to run in spikes, as we get some hardpack and stone/rocky ground in our races here on the Welsh borders. It would kill me...

Thanks for the advice Mrs F. I knew I wasn't making the half size rule up :-)

Hanneke - I agree spikes wouldn't be suitable for gravel/stone ground etc but judging by the places I've run XC so far, spikes are needed. Then again I've heard lots of people say that you're better off just buying one pair of fell shoes to cover the both types of races...

get one spike shoe and one fell shoe, just run on the appropriate edge of the course for the surface ;-)

personally i use walshes and find them excellent - if it's too muddy then it doesn't really matter what you wear.

Yes, I am all for the fell shoe option. Around here no-one runs in spikes... and even if the ground wasn't hard in places, I'd still opt for the fell shoes, more comfy and just as good a grip I'd say. as christy says, if its muddy, you are skating anyway, no matter what you wear :-)

Sir Pabsey - Knight of Fetch
i'm in adidas swoop2s for XC. I brought them as fell shoes but they as as good as slippers on wet rock so upgraded to walshes.

BUT - with the normal and lateral blades they are very good in the mud and really help with running on cambers. The higher ankle line means you cant loose them in really thick mud like you can with the low cut walshes. They are quite a narrow fit though.
