Thanks for that jono. You can't argue with their dataset, and it does match up with what everyone says about them. Though 5% "faster". 9 minutes on a 3hr marathon? Maybe I'm misreading that bit.

I also wonder if there is some confirmation bias (?) in the participants - those for whom they really, really want that PB and therefore are prepared to spend a reasonable sum on the kit to do it - making those people more likely to be hitting out at a PB in the races they've sampled which exaggerates the impact somewhat?

interesting stuff.

Has anyone here really gone and knocked 5% off their marathon time simply by switching shoes?

Judging by my recent 5kms in and out of them I think I like the feel more than I have become rocket fast.

SADLY !!

Looking at that analysis, the shoe switchers are only gaining about 2% compared to other shoes (much of the total 5% gain will be incremental improvement). Sounds plausible though I don't believe I gained that much overall from them (if I did, it means I got significantly worse in underlying speed at just the exact time I switched).

World record didn't come down by anything like 2% did it? That would be 2 mins 30 at their speeds.

There is likely to be some "placebo" effect of them for some people. Nothing wrong with that of course - telling yourself you can be fast because of the shoes, and then being fast with the shoes on is one of those correlation / causation things.

Nike must be laughing all the way to the bank though with the positive product impact from this (let's just ignore Mary Cain / NOP for the time being!)

I've always wondered about this.

When I trained for Chicago, I did all my speedwork and races in that cycle in Adidas Adizero Adios. The numbers already indicated i would most likely run what i did. I picked up the VFs shortly before the race, did 4 miles @ MP in them and raced the marathon in them.

I didn't get the recovery gains from them because i didn't do any of my workouts in them.

However on the day, my feet felt fresh. My stride was definitely bouncier and after that race my feet felt fresh. so i definitely think there is something to it.

I ran 2:40 marathon in April this year in Inov8's and was a bit crippled for a week. Switched to racing in VF in Oct and ran 2:30 in a fresh pair.

I would hazard a guess I was in 2:36ish shape if wearing same shoes as I did in April, so a smidge below 4% time improvement - but that's just a guess, I could be slightly out on the 2:36 estimate.

I do suspect the shoes I used to run everything in were a bit worse than average, they certainly weren't chosen for performance.

I also ran Snowdonia marathon six days after the 2:30 without any issues, pushing fairly hard and getting within 5 mins of the time I thought I might have run that course on fresh legs.

So I'm with all the data on this, and also in agreement that they help you recover very quickly - feels like I've seen so many faster runners doing way more marathons than normal this year. Sure you can get injured whatever you are wearing, but I think marathons now hurt a lot less with magic foam

Fuzzyduck, Inov8 are not known for the lightening fast road marathon racing shoes :) Did you run all your PBs in the VFs? Only ask because you 10k and 10 mile PB's correlate quite well with a 2:30 marathon. That half marathon is soft though ;)

Agree with those who think there is less impact damage in the VF. I get much the same from Hokas.

No - Inov8 selected for harder wearing soles as I kill shoes about 3 times faster than average, which gets expensive

You are spot on with observations about PBs, 10k/10M/marathon in VF and the rest in Inov8 so am hopeful to pull my HM time down a fair bit next time out
