There is 'magic', which I understand is patented hence reducing the ability of others to copy it. I think you could easily and credibly ban them under the additional assistance rule. I think a few manufacturers themselves believed this would be the case. The rule doesn't say that anymore though. One the reasons running is so accessible vs cycling is because it is low tech. |

I just can't see what is newly assistive about a carbon plate (which spikes have had for years, and some other trainers) and pebax foam (which is just foam, albeit a highly responsive one). It's patent's will be about the way that they work together, but it's not magic - it's just a system that doesnt cause as much energy loss as in other shoes / barefoot. There is no additional assistance. Assistance has to be a positive "boost" (in my reading of it) surely, an energy source which is supplemental to that put in by the runner at the time of running. I wonder if any high jumpers have tried leaping in them, or the spiked version of them? |

There is a limit on sole height for high-jumpers. There will need to be a limit on sole height for runners too, it's just a matter of time until they get round to it.

Larks - cyclist , train to be the best your engine can be and buy the best kit you can. As time trialler there is a lot of acceptance that kit is the great separator The best testers are on the best kit in the best position. Simply put 400 watts will move you up but a simple statement sums up testing Watts for show Aero for GO The last few years has seen a rise in road bike only testing to bring costs down but even that is not a level playing field with aero road bikes, suits , helmets, wind tunnel developed positions |

Cheers Gobi - I think it's that acceptance bit which is the new challenge for runners. Kit was always a factor, but never a great separator it seems for runners. Now, for what I expect to be a short period of time, it is. @jda - I knew there was a restriction, but I'll admit to being lazy and assuming it was the same for runners too. Clearly not. It's 19mm heel height for HJ, the VFs are 31mm I think. |

Next% 40mm heel stack, and Kipchoge wore 51mm AlphaFly in coasting round to sub2 Carbon plates don't seem to add much at all. It's true we've had Pebax foam for a while, this is just a vast amount of it, which seems to have the desired effect. Assuming it's the exact same stuff? What puzzles me is the competitors aren't releasing shoes with huge heel stacks, surely can't be some patent thing they can't get round? |

Given how soft the foam is, the stabilisation must be an issue. And yes there are various patents.

The New York Times have updated their analysis piece on the benefit of VFs. Interesting reading, even if not perfect science: nytimes.com |
