Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

No worries Mike - it happens to us all at some point

Terrible story - and it sounds like one that is getting the right amount of exposure now.

Any other 'ugly' stories ?

No axe to grind, I just remember 2012 and the poor guy next to me on the coach back who spent the whole journey honking into a variety of carrier bags

Wow, hi Cheshire Lady, are you and Home *both* back?!

They should have a party at the back (I'm not being facetious). The back should be celebrated as much as the front.

VMLM could learn from some ultras. Their sweepers are there to clearly enforce the cut off, to ensure that the trail is left in good state, for insurance purposes etc. Doesn't stop them being a portable party!

Ask Red Wine Runner, Kynon, Metro_Nome, Karen D and many, many more who sweep the Highland Fling, West Highland Way etc.

Runners at the back are the heart and soul of our sport - they should be support as much, or more, than the elites. :-) G

I notice that their endeavours to hit 7:30 didn't stop them taking selfies through Cutty Sark...

100% agree, someone's made a complete hash of this somewhere by accommodating a 7:30 pace group in a race with a 7:00 cut off. That needs to be reflected on and resolved for next year. Throwing out accusations about how this undermines VLM's inclusive nature is poppycock though - it's a mess, it should be apologised for and lessons should be learned. But it shouldn't really surprise anyone that London is a busy town that needs to be reopened, and the employees and contractors who were (broadly) just doing what they were told to do to get the roads reopened aren't the villains here (apart from the ones that sprayed dodgy chemicals around, though I seriously doubt the veracity of some of the severity of that).

Two disagreements (gentle ones!) with your post above
1. Taking selfies is part of the enjoyment of participation for some (not just because when I was cramping and puking and limping my way to the end of my 4:0x Boston marathon, I was taking selfies while high fiving the crowd!)
2. VMLM can be criticised for lack of inclusion by not adequately planning, focussing on and ensuring successful execution of the end of the race, as much as the middle and the start. Imagine if something catastrophic had occurred to Kipchoge, Farah et al? It would be front page news.

Lack of focus is lack of inclusion, imho. :-) G

That should be "the front", rather than "the start". I meant the elites, front runners, winners. You know what I meant, I'm sure! :-) G

:-)

Even running too. Though the journey ahead is a long one. I suspect if I was at a marathon now I'd be looking at cut off times
