My son and his girlfriend moved into a flat two weeks ago and refused all second hand offers and bought everything new.

Both our children took most of the stuff from their bedrooms (most of which they had a say in choosing anyway) - which also helped with our down-sizing exercise!

Fragile Do Not Bend
Can I ask some advice from those have retired, especially those who have retired after working an all-consuming full time job?

My husband has always planned to retire at 60 when he is eligible for his full company pension. He is 60 in March and has just been given, on the face of it, a fantastic option of taking voluntary redundancy - yay, 2 years salary for free.

However, the prospect of retirement is really stressing him out, maybe even scaring him. It’s a big step going from working full time for the same company for 40 years to suddenly stopping working, and he’s worried how he will mentally and emotionally cope. He was originally planning to ease himself in gradually by moving to part time but that now makes no sense from a financial point of view when he’s got the redundancy option. He doesn’t enjoy his job and it stresses him out, but at the moment I think it’s a case of ‘better the devil you know’.

I’m not looking for advice on things he can do, I’ve got loads of ideas and he’s got hobbies, but does anyone have any advice on coping with the mental and emotional side of retiring?

Not much use FDNB - that's sort of what I did, 1st time round - but too young (45) and I had youngish kids at home so slid into 50s housewife rather than retired person mentality and ended up wanting to go back to work.
This time around I'm also struggling with needing something to do to find routine, but also complicated by the unusual times we find ourselves in.

With the redundancy compo, there is no need to start the pension right away or make a, which gives time to see how he feels about filling his time and brain without work and time to see whether or not a part-time or voluntary role might suit.

However, the timing at the moment might not be great for finding time-filling activities.

THe "I don't know how I found the time to go to work" cliche isn't quite there for me yet - but everyone else I know retired seems to say it.
