anyway wrong thread for this ... back to retirement!
I was reading yesterday that you can avoid IHT by putting money in a pension ... that passes to spouse tac free so doesn't count to the limit

Anyway, unpopular opinion, but we're refusing to minimise our estate for IHT purposes and we both believe tax should be paid as due.

I don't think death should be a tax opportunity. I think we should pay more tax when living and working.

There are inheritance tax benefits from having your assets in a SIPP if you leave them to someone other than your spouse as the SIPP is treated as being outside your estate, and also income tax benefits for the beneficiaries if you die before 75. My SIPP provider gives the option of nominating the beneficiaries on the platform. In practice it's not relevant to me because unless Ernie throws me a big one and I die before I can spend and donate it I'll be well under the IHT threshold.

For me though, that was a consideration. I only have my sister left and we decided to skip her and my estate goes 50/50 to my niece and nephew. Dutch law applies to my estate which means they get majorly stung for tax as the tax free sum is something like €13.000. However: whatever is left in my SIPP will go to them too, as I nominate them on there and because it falls outside my estate, they just have to pay income tax. They can receive a one off gift of I think €35.000 each without it attracting tax so they should be ok and can use it to pay inheritance tax...

Just been given a pay rise which of course means more into the retirement pot so that helps

My estate will pay no IHT because the value of my estate above whatever IHT allowance is in place when I die will go to various charities.
