Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Remember the huge tax advantage of pensions only applies so long as the (marginal) rate you’re getting relief on for extra contributions exceeds the (marginal) rate you pay on receipt of the pension. That covers higher rate taxpayers stepping down to standard rate, and standard rate who expect to drop below the standard rate threshold, but not a large chunk of people in the middle. (At least I think that’s how it works, for various reasons I’ve

never bothered that much with pensions and saved by myself instead. I have a few bits and pieces due in a few years but am not reliant on them.)

Also remembering to factor in the tax free lump sum and whatever increase in value the investment has had into that

Exactly right jda. Pensions let you defer tax to a time when your marginal tax rate may be lower, as the cost of keeping the money locked up. For people in employment, there's also any employer contribution and national insurance savings from salary sacrifice that make them a good deal irrespective of the tax situation.

These are our “winter/spring” retirement views. 1.8k as the crow flies, but 4.6 as the road goes (two sides of a triangle). Convenient 5k virtual parkrun to the level crossing and back or 4 miles to the garage and back. Sunday 6/8 miler to the beach and round the bay. Everything is out and back though so almost no WSW points up for grabs.

Those photos are a good advertisement for retiring - the earlier the better! :-)
