I had 19 years with our own company: Wolseley Fine Arts. Before that I ran my own text agency in the Netherlands: translating, editing, writing. Lots of free lancers to "herd" I loved it, but through it I met my business partner in the gallery, so that is why I moved to the UK! Before that I ran an affiliate for Ecco Uitzendburo, that was like herding cats! But I always loved working with and motivating people. |

Now, I am coming out of 9 years of "hands on" garden and permaculture design. Loved it but had to give up working this year due to a cancer diagnosis. Although slowly getting better, I have decided to liquidate that business in 2024 and become a full time student while further healing cancer, then retire.

What was your job? Decision Software consultant Who was your employer (anonymise it as "one of the big 5 retailers" or otherwise if you want)? Experian, Fico, contracting with HBOS and Barclays Did you like your job when you started or at some previous point? It was a mixed bag. Some days good, some bad, some meh. The meh days started to outweigh the good ones by a lot. Did you like it by the time you chose to retire? Some of it, but I had other priorities, like supporting my wife and our son and, erm, enjoying life. Do you feel you retired later than you would like, about the right time (or hopefully unusual, but were you forced to retire earlier than you would have liked and wish you could have worked longer?) Would I have liked to have worked longer - hell NO! |

Would I have liked to have worked longer? Actually: no! The cancer has meant that I have at last been able to break through the catch 22 temporary job that was my garden design business. "Temporary" for 9 years! I can now at last finish my studies |

What was your job? I worked for a self made multi millionaire who invested and built a property portfolio. I ran his buisnesses and over saw the property management, and block management, budgeting, dealing with suppliers, builders and keeping all the books up to date. Also dealt with all staff issues. Who was your employer (anonymise it as "one of the big 5 retailers" or otherwise if you want)? One man band. Did you like your job when you started or at some previous point? Yes I liked my job when started and my boss was great to work for. Did you like it by the time you chose to retire? Hated it - boss had changed totally, was involved in politics in IOM and turned into a complete arsehole. 26 years of working for him amounted to nothing. Do you feel you retired later than you would like, about the right time (or hopefully unusual, but were you forced to retire earlier than you would have liked and wish you could have worked longer?) If I had had a different job I don't think I would have retired as early as I did. Although saying that I always planned on retiring at 55 and as it was I finished 2 weeks before my 55th birthday. |
