Both my parents had taken out pre-paid funeral plans so all I had to do was choose the celebrant and service details. No wake as such, just people gathering back at their house for tea and cakes.
My mum was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was 9, never took medication & doesn’t have the capacity for much, so I’m stuck sorting it as my only sister stays in the Western Isles.

Triplet Dad
We paid for our own wedding 22 years ago as we wanted to do our own thing with no parental interference.
TripletMum is penguin mad so we booked the Mansion House at Edinburgh Zoo which gave us an opportunity to take part in a private penguin parade with just us and our guests. We then booked corporate hospitality at Murrayfield for the Ireland v Scotland 6 nations rugby game the next day. It all added up to a higher price but it was what we wanted so we were happy to pay.
Sadly, foot and mouth hit a few weeks beforehand so the zoo was shut and we ended up with a more standard church and hotel wedding instead, which was still very enjoyable, and we did still have penguins on our cake
Ironically we paid a lot less for a round of IVF a few years later which provided us with the much better long term benefits of three daughters.

My mum got rather ripped off with her funeral plan, I think - it was a 3K "insurance" type product at £50 a month. So after 5 years you had paid £3K and every penny after that is profit for them. That was 10 years ago. But if she stops paying now she gets nothing! So the gamble is, does she live 5 more years? Each time you ask the question you lose! G

My parents had a funeral insurance. It was awful! My dad died 20 odd years before my mum and she insisted using it. It was actually embarrassingly bad! So when mum died, we were paid out a meagre lump sum to go elsewhere so we could do things properly for both of them. Proper flowers, a basket in stead of paper board coffin with plastic handles, nice flowers everywhere and proper refreshments, not a dry ham and cheese roll and over stewed coffee from an urn... People came from far away for my dad as well and there was grumbling. It was extremely embarrassing but everything we wanted different we had to pay for, which mum refused because... We paid out of the inheritance before inheritance tax was applied, so practically, my parents paid for it and the money was there. We very much felt it was the last thing we could do for them.

Oh and re inheritance tax: the tax free sum is €2.440 so everyone pays vast amounts of tax in the Netherlands. It would have been below the treshold in the UK...

And lol at Triplet dad's money saved on wedding -> IVF to the triplets. Great result all round. (Though you'll need to get saving if and when those 3 want to tie the knot?!) My wee sis sold a Banksy to pay for her IVF. Our nephew is quite artistic, to be fair. G

My mum had a budget cremation for about £1000. Around 5yrs ago. The budget cremation service is great if you don't want a showy do. Other things (a memorial service and a tea for everyone) were provided freely by family friends.
I would happily give my daughter money for a house deposit. Not so sure I'd give her an equivalent sum for a marriage as happily. I suspect she thinks the same.

I am skipping my sister in my will, leaving my estate 50/50 to my niece and nephew as they will need it just to get on the property ladder... I may even stipulate that is what it is for!!!
