Diogenes
Agraria Road
From the crest of the hill the view of the cathedral is quite arresting. I almost miss seeing a car ascending narrowly avoiding apprehension for driving without due care and attention. My mind being on higher things.

Agrarian Road
Once the path was clear But moss and sodden greens
have seeped through stone The weeds curl round Where sand once filled It’s life but smells of death
The car stands forlorn Paddling in the grass

Appian road
Most ancient of the Roman roads, the Appian artery runs up the leg of Italy from heel to knee. For all roads lead to Rome.
Two thousand years stand still the black basalt blocks. Hollowed, smoothed and worn by crash of chariot wheels, the Legions’ measured stride, and skittering horses’ hooves.
But now the only sounds:
the tourists' questing step and rumbling cycle tyres, and families seeking shade to rest and picnic in.
On either side, among the pines, The echoing empty ruins of long dead Romans' tombs. From which, with socket eyes Death views its passing trade.

That started with two lines:
I'd be so much happier, On the via Appia
But Diogenes and Dipps excellent works kept creating images of roads and mortality....
