OK maybe a list of distances related to distances between places, so we can start with Lymington to Isle of Wight and work up to length of the Thames with other spots in between and have something to cater for everyone?

Although it's 40 miles, so will take me till next summer at my planned rate of 1.25 miles a week, I'm very tempted by the River Taff one. I was brought up within a quarter of a mile of the confluence where the Taff starts and my mum still lives there. It would be quite fun (for me) to tick off all the villages along the way.:-)

What about the length of the Thames or Severn - around 140 miles - as a whole year target, with interim distances marked by places on the route or other notable distances as in between targets?
