icemaiden - I like that idea! When you reach a 'landmark destination' you can treat yourself to a 'local delicacy'! :D

Yes good idea Icemaiden. I could do most of it in the pool but once I get to the Oxford stretch(near where i live.) I could go and do it in the River .

Did another two miles today . I think I'm going round in circles!

Shudders at the thought of swimming in the actual Thames. My cousin rowed it a few years ago, not all at once you understand.

I have found the Thames Path page nationaltrail.co.uk which gives distances from the source to Teddington:

Cricklade 12.3 miles
Lechlade 23.3
Newbridge 40.0
Oxford 53.9
Abingdon 63.6
Wallingford 77.0
Goring 83.9
Reading Bridge 95.1
Henley Bridge 104.1
Marlow Bridge 112.6
Maidenhead Bridge 120.3
Windsor 126.9
Shepperton Ferry 140.9
Teddington Footbridge 151.8

Not sure if they're all famous for food - Oxford sausages? But perhaps more local knowledge could come into play? That's about a year's worth of swimming for me. Not entirely sure yet I want to commit to that much, but I may not have a lot of choice.

A friend did a swim trek weekend in the Thames, and survived to tell the tale but I don't think I would be keen either

With a bit of effort I could find the intermediate villages to give more points to aim for. Lunch at the Trout at Godstow anyone?

I paddled Devizes to Westminster a couple of times. No way I'd swim in all of it.

I do recall some great pubs though........

After a spell of spinal blocks, and then a virus, I aim to hit the pool again this evening. Determined to finish this, just under 4 miles to go.....

I grew up swimming in the Thames at Oxford. Two places mainly, Long Bridges which was open to the public and Sandford , just down from the lock, which was wild swimming. Everybody used to swim there. Not any more though.

Got to the pool for the 8 o'clock crawl. Had more company today. Still managed 2500 metres.

I bought a book in Oxfam - I never knew that about the River Thames, packed with facts about said river and the places on it, all the way down to the Thames Barrier. So with a bit of use of the route planner I think I can measure out the interim places as well and supply some facts.

Do we want to start straight after the Channel Swim or shall we wait until the start of 2015? One of my pools, at least, will be closed over the hols so I won't get as good a chance as I do now of keeping this up.
