theguardian.com - sorted if people fancy a read.

Shame about that G, I recall quite a few years ago Hanneke of this parish rode the solo 24 hours, the saturday Mrs DB and I attended was awash but the event still went ahead.
I wonder if the ground was so badly affected after that placed future events in doubt.
IIRC didn't it relocate to Gatcombe for a few years, maybe twas a contributing factor then.

That was Mountain Mayhem, Dai. The Malverns Classic goes back even pre-Mayhem, but it kind of died post-Mayhem. Then some locals resurrected it last year - ironically when Mayhem was in ‘retirement’ and it went down really well again, so the organisers decided to go for an annual event.

Ironically, Mountain Mayhem is coming out of retirement - though not under the care of Pat Adams, so we’ll see just how different it is. It has moved again from Gatcombe to Market Harborough - next weekend!

Incidentally, Hanneke rode solo in the last year it was at Eastnor. I was there. It took me 1.5-2hrs to do a 7 mile lap as it was a complete bogfest. A lot of people said ‘never again’ after that event (2012). It was truly grim.

Same location had me fooled Cath, did my first event there back in 91 or 92.

Saw Tim Gould and David Baker in the pro event climbing the same hill as I had done earlier. I was blowing out of every orifice while they were chatting and trying to work out who was their challenge, Fred Salmon came past moments later and he at least was breathing hard.

The nationals were there the same year and Gould rode everyone off his wheel and won by a country mile, he was so good and it's great to see him back at CX events, still winning.

Crikey that brought back some memories, mostly metal frames, no suspension, thumbshifters, shit helmets, thin tyres. IIRc there was a terrific fuss about Mark Gornall as he should have been ranked with Gould etc.

Contrast that with Cath's ebike photo a few posts back, the rate of progress is ridiculous in 29 years.

Back to work...

Just saw your last post Cath, was it really 7 years ago, wow that has gone quick.
We parked by the cricket pitch and it was a mudfest trying to get out.
we walked about half a mile to the course and put on a stone in mud stuck to our boots.
Did not stay long, tried to run alongside H and I was quicker that her pedalling it was so gloopy.
