OK, here's a bit of Northern Soul folklore for you. Instrumentals are a massive part of the scene and there aren't many more popular and well-known than the 45 known as "Strings a Go Go" by The Bob Wilson Sounds. This was not the record's actual title, "Strings a Go Go" is both a cover-up AND probably the biggest selling bootleg ever, there was a time when you couldn't go into a youth club in the North of England and not hear it. The actual title is "Double Cookin" by the Checker Board Squares on the Villa record label, it was bootlegged by a guy named Simon Soussan, a person who was notorious on the Northern Soul scene and to this day probably has a price on his head. There's a wikipedia page for him if anyone is interested. In the end it turned out that "Double Cookin" was quite rare and he didn't need to bother with the cover-up really, however the title "Strings a Go Go" stuck and that's how it's remembered by most. en.wikipedia.org |

Cheesy video, but great record - anyone recognise the vocalist? It is of course Bobby Womack before he went solo. |

And my last one for today, haven't heard this for a while. Big on the London NS scene (I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it's a thing). |

I lied, can't leave it alone. I wish I could convey this .... you've all heard of Wigan Casino and many will tell you it had a certain sound and style, well this record is 100% typical of that, indeed it's only showing on a CD is on one of the Goldmine "Wigan Casino Story" albums. Don't know much about it, possibly blue-eyed. |
