Runnign for that long, Plod must have been mainly fat-fueled though, Plod, as it should be. The demands on stored glycogen were, perhaps, quite limited in terms of fuelling muscles.

the coke and the jelly babies, I suspect, gave you enough blood sugar to keep your head straight and your concentration there.

I could be way off the mark here and I may get shot down in flames for missing the point but that is how it seems to me from my limited (and non-running) experience.

HOD, isn't it the same thing? Everything I've read compares "Hitting the wall" with "bonking" or "Getting the knock" or whatever it's called. The medical/scientific stuff I've seen says it's the same thing.

I fully expect to get embarassingly emotional when I finish. Tears and slobbering and hugging anyone I recognise and everything.

Note that's when, not if. PMA. Mansuit zipped up and all that.

I have hit the wall twice.

Edinburgh 2006, first ever marathon and in hindsight prep wsnt great...longest run was probly less than 20 miles and it was a hot day...the last 6 were torture but I kept going.

FLM 2009 and my first sub 3 attempt. I made many mistakes...drank too much before hand, had about 12 pees before start...was desperate again on start...hd to stop at mile one to relieve myself...mile 1 in 7:16 with a pee stop, so I started fast...proceeded to go too fast and got well ahead of time. By 10 I realised I was toiling and by halfway I was now down on target time and striggling. Somewhere about 17 I realised i had taken no gels or jelly babies but it was too late, I was finished and slowing and the gel made no difference. About mile 21 I was overtaken by Nell McAndrew and I put in a quicker half mile now that I had something to focus on....then I had to give in and let Nell go.....The last 2km were done in about 12 mins and I was in pieces. After the finish I got to horseguards, lay down in the gravel with cramps engulfing my bnody and waited for my family to find me. wasnt pretty. Will not make the same mistakes again
