Gobi
I used one at 9miles when I was a 73 minute runner.

So I know I can run for ages on nothing and yet at the intensity I ran for a 73 min half at 9 miles or so it was very welcome.

Now that is very interesting, Gobi! I've always been puzzled by the 90 minute idea about how long one's muscle glycogen is supposed to last. Surely if you're just sauntering, you're going to be using far less of your reserves than if you're going full pelt, so the time should be variable. Your experience suggests that if you're really running hard in a half marathon, you may have depleted those reserves rather earlier than 90 minutes.

I think I may give this a go in Sunday's half marathon. If nothing else, it will give me a new way of buggering things up which I haven't tried before.

I wouldn’t have a strong view either way, I don’t think it can be much benefit but what’s it going to cost? A few secs unless you choke.

Well, another disappointing flop there, I'm afraid - missed my target by a fair bit, with a time of 1:21:36. Migraine for two days before meant I wasn't feeling great at the start, and couldn't run the race I'm sure I was capable of. Still, highest placing ever in this race, 11th (out of just under 2000), so maybe others found it tough as well (the day was a little warmer than we've been used to, and there was more of a headwind than expected on the second half). Next shot, September...

You seem to be in a similar boat to me J2R, looking at your pb you should be capable but just need to have that good day to get it

I've come to the conclusion that I have to do something quite different if I'm to translate my shorter distance times to HM performance. I'm clearly lacking stamina for the long distances. I plan to do a lot more long (15-20 mile) runs over the summer, many of them either as progressive runs or with long HM pace sections late on.

1:20:04 at Peterborough today. That's 4 HMs 1:20:12 or faster, without breaking 1:20:00. WTF.

Sounds like my unsuccesful efforts to beat my 10k PB of 36.30. 4 runs of 36.3x in 6 months.

Did you manage to follow the plan you set out in April?

J2r how annoying! I ran Peterborough today too and, despite the rain, couldn’t have asked for better conditions for a pb attempt
