I took part in the Seaview 17 a couple of times. It starts at Countisbury on the county border and goes 20 miles (not 17!) eastwards to finish in Minehead. It's the only race where I've ever had to stop and wait for a train at a crossing before being able to continue!

Used to live in Lynton - some serious hills around there - glad I'm going to be running in Cambridgeshire!

I can't remember Minehead...we did go there years ago when we lived in Bristol. Dunster Castle was relatively nice...fortunately we had an NT membership back then. It got a lot of use!

I was only 6 or 7 when we left so don't remember much. Went on holiday to Minehead a couple of years ago for a half-term and we drove to Lynton. Some of the hills were the kind where you think if it gets any steeper the front of your car is going to leave the road and the whole car is just going to flip backwards (We went to Minehead on the basis of a recommendation for a milkshake bar - only to discover that whichever half-term it was it was either too early or too late and the season hadn't started or had already finished!)

I grew up in Somerset and we used to go on family day trips to different parts of North Devon. The big attractions for a small boy were firstly the drive up Porlock Hill (according to Wikipedia this is the steepest hill on an A-road in the UK!), where we used to stare out of the car window at the escape lanes and wonder what it would be like flying back down with brakes not working and ending up in one of those, and secondly the good old Lynton-Lynmouth railway. |
