Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Skipping. That thing with a rope small girls used to do in the school playground. But also boxers. Or was that just Rocky?

Apparently it isn't called skipping these days, but "jumping rope". Sounds much more serious.

So, does anybody here skip / jump rope? Is it useful in any way? I am led to believe that it may improve my running over rocks (talus; another new word I have learned today), does this sound possible?

I've not been doing a lot of running but I do a lot of skipping, usually a couple of times a week in some sort of mixed workout. Can't really comment on whether it helps running in any way but it gets the heart rate up and it certainly works the calf muscles and the feet themselves.

I knew there'd been a thread on this subject previously but I hadn't realised it was so long ago!

I still can, but I generally don't because there isn't room in the house or garage and I'm not sure I need the neighbours thinking I'm even more eccentric than they already do.

Our neighbours one side know what I'm like and are good with it. They also have a shed set up as a gym but don't use it as much as I use mine. The other side play their shi**y music far too loud and annoy me so I couldn't give a monkey's chuff what they think. I usually skip on the Fitness Patio, which is also where I do a fair amount of my weight training if it's dry.

So, is it the consensus that I can't do it in the house? I don't really care what my neighbours think.

I tried skipping (when I was younger) at my parents house - it was fine as they live in an old house with high ceiling. Don't skip anymore as I don't trust my knees

We have skipping ropes in the gym I go to. Most impressive to see a boxer skipping, I find it mesmerising.

I did gentle circuit classes a few years ago and occasionally the skipping rope would be put out. I was like a lumbering baby elephant the first few times but after a while I did get a bit better so I can see that does improve agility and being light on your feet.

Maybe use the garage if the ceiling height will allow. Or out in the garden after dark 😉

@jacdaw I'd say that you're only going to be able to skip indoors if you've got very high ceilings, and also if you do get a mat to protect the floor. Outdoors is definitely easier unless it's very windy when you get some issues with the rope being in the wrong place at the wrong time!
