I've a lot of sympathy for the refs - it's a tough job in a pressure cooker environment. And all the talk recently from on high is that intent is irrelevant, it's the outcome that determines the punishment, so from that point of view the red card was perfectly understandable.

Yep - what I meant was I can understand him making that decision given the noises from World Rugby. The whole episode smacks of the ref being thrown under a bus rather than having made a glaring error

Ireland would have won still if they had 14 men, the red card being rescinded changes nothing

I've been debating whether to post this. I think ref Peyper was right and the review committee are wrong. We are trying to prevent head damage. Steward and Keenan were going for a loose ball. Keenan went in with his head down. Steward went in with his full body upright and protected himself when a collision became imminent, at Keenan's expense. Keenan left the field with a reasonably serious head injury. I think we all agree the behaviour we want is that players do not go into contact in a way where they can collide with someone's head. Steward should either have gone down to the ball or have pulled out much earlier. I've heard people give 2 defences 1. He would have given Ireland possession and a scoring opportunity. My answer : tough sh*t. That's where the game has to go. Same as not taking a man out in the air. We have changed behaviours there so you go up for the ball, not the man or you don't go in at all. We need similar behaviours where a head may be involved in a collision. The other defence is that both going in head first could have ended with head on head. Maybe, but then Steward and Keenan would both have had same level of risk and the mitigation would have been clear. The ref's on-field decision should have been supported. That would have reinforced the intention to minimise or irradiated head collisions. And coaches should be encouraged to change the nature of players' engagement in collision situations to that end. It's a mess. And if anyone wonders why I feel so strongly about this - my last game of rugby, early 1991, playing for my Uni, one of my best friends and the centre outside me, had a head injury in a collision, sustained a blood clot and was paralysed for life. I missed the tackle - he took the tackle for me. Head injuries need to be eliminated from the game and we need to do more, not less, to protect players. Whether it's long term, repeated mid level trauma resulting in dementia like Doddie Weir and many others, or whether it's an acute trauma, like my friend Paul. Sorry for the rant, but I feel about this quite strongly. |

Doddie Weir had MND not dementia. Don’t know if there’s a proven link between rugby and MND

My apologies Fields. Dementia is the one with recently proven link of 15 x risk for rugby players, not MND.

Actually no, it is MND too. 15x and 2.5 x for dementia. 2.5x increased risk of neurodegeneration in group of former rugby players 15x increased risk of motor neurone disease (also referred to as ALS) in cohort alzheimersresearchuk.org |

And fucking hell Fields. Of all the things in HappyG's post, you picked on that? I'm sorry, HG. That sounds awful and definitely something that would result in strong views on this issue. |
