Precisely so. I can probably drive from Vancouver to San Diego, or cycle round Vietnam - but not both. And as I get older my ability to do either diminishes.

One the one hand that is quite a profound meditation, on the other Sylvia Plath was mad as a box of frogs.

I've heard this expressed as "You can do anything, but you can't do everything. So pick something"

It's a big world, with lots of doors, some of which are locked, and some of which might (or might not) have a fig behind them.

The point that I forget is that if one doesn't choose a fig in a timely manner, all the figs will go off.

Always used to say that the time spent picking figs off my fig tree in late September was my best paid work of the year, based on the fact that organic figs were £2 for 3 in the supermarket at the time, and some years I would get a few hundred figs.

Hummus recipe:

Proper hummus is served with a drizzle of olive oil, rather than oil being a significant ingredient in its own right. This is what should go in it:

• 1½ cups cooked chickpeas or 1 (15-ounce) canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed*
• 3 tablespoons tahini
• 3 tablespoons lemon juice
• 1 garlic clove, mashed
• ¼ teaspoon salt, or more to taste
• Approximately 2-4 tablespoons room-temperature water or aquafaba, or more if needed
• Optional garnishes: extra virgin olive oil, sumac or paprika, finely chopped parsley or other herbs, whole chickpeas

This particular recipe from thymeandtoast.com but it’s typical of the Middle Eastern way of making it.
