I normally don't want to get involved in rows but ... when someone wheels out "the tax-payer" ... Like the majority of people running in races aren't tax-payers? I do actually agree in principle that at least a share of extra expenses should be covered by events, I am talking about the excessive and onerous charges police (and councils) put on races sometimes and why they get the say so (police are employed, not elected, after all) which can curtail or event prevent events. The difference, if you like, between oversight and ensuring public safety and having things done for their own convenience.

(I will also say that the police I see in action at events are, if not always cheerful, generally helpful and at least not obstructive.)

Absolutely, they are tax payers and I'm not looking to 'wheel out' anything. Police are appointed, not employed, but thats a side issue ;-) I'm not a race organiser nor a police finance person but I believe that the rates that are charged are set by govt based on a nominal daily rate for an officer and are transparent - Police don't choose them but in the current climate I would imagine that Police Scotland would be encouraging as many events as possible as it is extra revenue, rather than trying to prevent them.

And the say so comes as they are charged with maintaining public safety and if an event risks the safety of the public they should be able to withdraw their support - it won't be from a convenience point of view anyway.

Oh, and certainly don't want this to be considered a row!! Friendly discussion :) Don't do rows and if it seems that it is heading that way then I will happily STFU and get back to work ;-)

If police are required at races then it's surely going to incur cost and therefore the organiser must recoup that through the entry fee? I've raced twice this year so far...similar entry fees, 0.9 miles of a difference in race length, one totally away from roads the other involving road closures, policing, etc etc. Packed goody bag, medal, chip timing etc at the latter. Tiny box of raisins at the former. Interesting where the money goes....

Devils advocate here. for example do all nightclubs pay directly a similar fee for having police attend every weekend at throwing it time?

I saw a car driver argue with G4 guys at the Glasgow Half as they were being stopped from leaving a side street. The driver saw a gap and gunned it causing a few runners to jump and shout. Luckily the elites hadnt quite got to the other side of the road or he could have been knocking Haile over

I`ve seen a few "altercations" at various halfs and marathons at the bit near Halfords Seafield where they phase the traffic as you approach the left/right turn before going onto the prom at the Cat`n`Dog home. Saw a driver getting booked there when he told the police motorcyclist he was going to "drive right over these f*****g runners" :-o
