Interestingly, “updated” guidelines still reference that you’re allowed to travel 5 miles

The exercise rules are better / looser than in March including the travel to exercise bit but there is a general overrider of "Travel no further than you need to reach to a safe, non-crowded place to exercise in a socially distanced way." Common Sense prevails I guess. Being in a smallish town with a forest just over a mile away I can't see much need for me to travel - different if I was in a city.

I’m glad I can take Chester (puppy) in the car sometimes and not feel too guilty for it, walks in quiet forests are much better for him than the streets round here

I've travelled twice for exercise already this year: drove about a mile each way to do fakeparkruns. (Lazy, moi? I was focussing my efforts :-p Also, bypassing the ice on the way to somewhere safely runnable.)

I'll be driving again as well, the hire e-bikes are too far away to reach on foot.

it's a tricky balance - i've no qualms about being stuck in aberdeen city for exercise, but finding routes and places to go with slip free pavements from my door are a complete lottery at the moment (spent half of mine yesterday on the roads because they were safer, and both nearby parks had perimeter paths like sheet ice). not sure if jumping on a 3 heading to kincorth hill/cove coastal is really 'necessary'.....

I think where things are in the grey area of the rules, you have have to think about “red face test” (I use this in all walks of life)- could you argue with a straight face that whatever you did was acceptable and for the right reasons (taking into account rules, risk, etc)

Note- not the same as saying make up the rules/choose which ones to follow!

I like the travel no further than is necessary for safe exercise idea and to stay here is probably safer than the drive into the city but it means I run on my own so once a week I may drive to meet one other person then although I usually meet her after my work anyway.

One thing I've always wondered was if I start and finish at my house, can I go as far as I want (as I'm not travelling to exercise).

I suppose the same applies if I travel the five miles and then exercise, can I ran as far as I want?

Not planning any of these, I'm just curious if other folks take on it. Does it all come down to reasonableness?

That was the way I applied the rule and did a few 20 mile runs and so may have been8-9 miles as the crow flies away from home

There's no limit to the time you can exercise for, but one thing to consider is the What If question. What if you have an injury, etc - would you then have to use public transport, or call someone to make an otherwise unnecessary journey to come and fetch you, etc. So the more sensible approach if you want to run/bike long might be to do multiple smaller laps nearer home rather than long out and backs
