I've ordered some of the Kahtoola Nanospikes (which are smaller, as name suggests). Good tip to check for tungsten carbide spikes, which these are. The Microspikes were great for thick snow and ice, but too much for patches of ice on pavements. Hopefully these will be better. I'm surprised Yaktrax are working for people. In my old running club people who used them said they were useless for real snow and ice and also disintegrated very quickly on tarmac or rock. But we did tend to do a lot of running in the Pentlands on pretty rocky trails, so perhaps that was what did it. Fingers crossed these Nanospikes do the biz! Off out for a tentative run now with just rubber! |

I've had several pairs of Yaktrax too, before I stuck to built-in spikes. Sometimes they lasted up to 500 km, other times only say 150 km. Those times the rubber strips had worn through at the edge of the shoe. I found if I was careful with positioning so that there were springs near the edges I could make them last. But as I said, built-ins are my overall best. I also have some Microspikes but they are heavy and give a really rough ride on trampled snow turned to ice in late winter, whereas Spikecross will work in those conditions. |

Happy the Kahtoola Nanospikes are great, I did a half on icy paths on Sunday with no difficulties, a wee trot out on trails near Ben Gullipen yesterday too. Like a ice rink everywhere & had no problems. |

Steve, I prefer the idea of being able to pull them on to existing trainers that I already find comfortable. It's pretty rare that we have this type of dangerous running situation (in my locale anyway). Thanks though and it was your tungsten carbide tip that made me check that the Nanospikes were tc. Thanks Ally, fingers crossed. They arrive tomorrow hopefully. Went A over T today but no harm done, luckily. G |

TC tips made short work of ice rink conditions this morning. Equally, them made themselves of use on the hill Monday. We prefer built in, because they allow for torsional flex in a shoe without popping off. Monday, just before dropping off the NE edge and heading back for the truck. This morning's run was in the dark, not image-worthy. |

Oh, but whatever works BTW. Any fool that wants to adopt our style of spikes + axe as a descending technique, well we didn't teach that... Like when we turned up to an ultra in sandals and stood next to a Hoka wearer. We could all laugh about the fact we could never use what the other did, but it all works for the individual |

Looking South from Lochnagar. Snapped two groups, one ascending and one descending, that were approaching from the more usual Loch Muick side. Just thought they scaled it quite nicely.

Proportion scaled we mean. We have no idea how well they managed the ascent |
