Had a fab 12.5 miles in Ochils with _andy He was in the gnarlier Kahtoola micro spikes I was in the nano spikes. I think we were both pleased to have confident grip in everything from shin deep snow to bare tarmac with solid ice patches. Andy had best grip obv but my 80% grip was food too and I didn't have to take mine off on bare rocky road and tarmac sections. But both were unfailing safe on treacherous surfaces. Fab day out! :-) G

There was a lot of ice - perfect conditions for the spikes.

And as if that wasn't enough, I had Innov8 O-rocs on, which have in-built spikes - great for a bit of ice, but not enough for this morning's sheet ice conditions. HappyG(rrr) get top marks for shorts in those conditions!

Andy, do not the spikes retract on the Oroc? Seem to recall something like that, so good on soft stuff, but not hard ice.
Might have imagined that.

It actually wasn't cold on the legs at all today. The ice was severe, as bad as I've run in (though I've run in deeper snow) but it wasn't actually that cold. Maybe +1C at bottom and -1C at top? And no wind chill until we hit the summits. Perfect route planning by Andy, thanks mate! :-) G

You’re lucky Happy, I was on Ben Ledi on Friday & the wind was as raw as a raw thing. Easily -10 I reckon. Was -5 in the car going through Callander.

I ordered Kahtoola nano spikes which arrives on Saturday after my run. Cue and overnight thaw. :)

Had a walk on the icy paths around the parks in town and they are very good if noisy on the pavements. No chance of sneaking up on anyone!

@CothH - Alas, the O-rocs don't have retractable spikes. It's because of them being fixed that I have put very little mileage on them and they still look new after many years (almost 10 years?) I'll only run in them if I know there'll be no tarmac bits at all. And if it's truly icy, they're not quite enough and I'll need to carry the microspikes anyway.

I thought the Nano Spikes were a really good intermediate Andy, didn't you? Gave me 80 or 90% of the grip you had in the Micros and more than your O-rocs, but I didn't have to take them off at all, even on the tarmac?

Will def bring my Micros in my bag up the hill next time though. No use in the car. If the deeper snow had continued in more places I'd have been struggling in just the Nanos. :-) G

If they are carbide I wouldn't worry about tarmac and granite. I have over 1200 km on my Spikecrosses with a lot of patchy-conditions running and the spikes (and therefore protected lugs) look almost as good as new. It is the lining in the heel that is wearing out first.
