I was talking in general & not to anyone specific on the thread. Apologies if it was taken any other way.

Nae problem, we misread that. Ditto, with the sorry.

Think lockdown has us more jittery than ever.

Completely CotH and Gus. That's way beyond the level of conditions I would run in - not ice axe trained and never climbed or ice climbed.

Both of the Kahtoolas could / would come off on steep ice or snow with a lot of force.

They help to prevent fore and after and lateral slip. Not suitable for climbing, I would say.

I spent years messing around with ice axe arrests while bum sliding on the hills in my youth. The one time I had a real fall some time later the muscle memory came in very handy with a slick axe arrest.

Scariest moment from those days was on Liathach, on my own in winter as my friends were too hung over to join me and I was young and foolhardy. Got to a point most of the way up where it was too slippery to go up or down and the crampons were attached to the back of my rucksac. Cue a very scary 10 minutes attaching spikes to boots standing on a narrow ledge with one hand while holding an axe wedged as well as possible.

Despite still owning ridgid boots and crampons plus two axes, I stick to mountain adventures in good, ice and snow free, weather these days!

Ha, this thread had been taken over by winter kit talk... which is great!

Your Liathach tale brought back memories from just over 20 years ago on An Teallach, where I'd headed up a gully on the summit ridge only to find the way barred, with ice axe in frozen turf and realised that my helmet was still in my rucksack... I still remember looking back down (and down and down) as I carefully put it on, then downclimbed to find a wiser route. Happy days.

An actual race has opened for entries - woohoo !! Fingers and everything else crossed.

Glen Lyon Trail Race - 15.5 miles around Loch Lyon on Sunday 6th June.

Entry form on Facebook group Glen Lyon Race Chat ( it's a bit of a pfaff as it's a pdf you need to fill out and email, I used website simplypdf.com to convert to Word)
