I've only watched the England games, because Im not a big enough fan to watch more than that. I must admit, Premiership rugby is s but more of an open and flowing game, which for me makes it more entertaining.
From what I've seen so far, I don't think England have much chance. They just aren't good enough. I wi continue to make efforts to enjoy it. Maybe an Austrailua v NZ final could sway me.

Do you think the Japan game had an effect? Death or glory at the end rather than being pragmatic?

Watch the Japan SA game, it really is one of the best games of recent years
I'm hoping France get to the final and that it's fourth time lucky

Don't think that had an effect, it was hardish kick and England should have been able to secure the ball and win another penalty if necessary. Getting bundled into touch was a no no.

For me there were two real issues. The first is the use of replacements where there is no need, not sure if all England,s changes were forced by injury. This changed the shape of their defence and the second was what seemed to be a relaxation in concentration once they had a reasonable lead. There seemed to be a bit of a chinese parliament before the final decision to kick for touch, as LN wrote above it might have been inspired by the Japanese win. Acknowledge the contrast in the last sentence and the use by me of the countries but I think it was an influence. The game was lost long before that final few minutes.

Agree, can't get on with League. 6 tackles then welly it down the field as far as you can. Repeat for most of game.
More annoyed than gutted about last night. Bone headed from England, was that two pens given away in the first 60 seconds to allow Wales territory then tge 3 pointer. Got on top then just kept coughing up 3 pointers, usually straight after scoring.
Felt the ending coming about 25 mins away....then that bone headed end. Compounding stupidity onto stupidity. We had barely marched Wales back in mauls all game, usually got turned. Not one kick at goal was missed last night. So we opt to gamble, but chuck to the front where it is much easier to defend, because we're scared ot arsing up the throw to the back.
Welsh players were fist pumping in delight when we went for the corner.
Credit to Wales, courage and hung in there.

I don't think they were just being brave though, I think it was about %ages, I doubt they would have made the same decision if the kick was in front of the posts.

But as others said, Farrell didn't look like missing a kick all night. I'd have rated him 80%+ to have slotted that one too. I didn't like the decision before it turned out the shitty way that it did. The Japanese made that call in a game that was a try-fest. This game only had one try apiece in 78 minutes to that point. Plus, Japan had different motivation - the chance to beat a 'big' rugby nation for the first time ever. For England, it was all about qualifying out of the pool, and preferably winning the pool. A draw would have been acceptable.
I think we only made one replacement that could have been said to be a choice - Ford on for Burgess. Which is what most commentators would have wanted to see, I think. All the rest were injury (or just being out on your feet with cramp) - Billy V, both Youngs, Lawes, or the standard swap of props around the hour mark. Very rare any prop stays on for 80 minutes now, and I don't think switching props did us any harm (and Goode never came on). so I make it only one deliberate choice replacement made. The subs issue is a red herring.
The number of penalties was the real problem - not figuring out how the breakdown was being reffed well enough.
I suspect (or maybe it's just a strong version of hope) that Wales won't beat Aus. Partly because of all the injuries, partly just because they aren't great at beating SH nations anyway. So England can still qualify (and maybe top the group) by beating Australia. It's not over yet.

Very true ptb, I suspected that it could be W1 L1 for the big 3 which is where the Fiji bonus point comes into things
That said, beating the Aussies will not be easy

It would have been interesting to hear what Farrell was saying when they made they penalty decision.
