Billy, Nowell and Manu all past it. Farrell close behind them. They used to be able to bully the opposition but even if they still had that speed and strength (they don't) you need more than that now - you need some guile and intelligence. The difference Slade made, with some thought and creativity (and no silly pens), made it blindingly obvious.

First sight of Ribbans and he looks useful. Simmonds played well, but would be better at 8. Steward continues to grow into a class international 15.

Eddie used to be ruthless with the squad, keep them hungry, never let anyone get to comfortable in the Jersey.

And it worked. But now here we are, a familiar 'group'. Of players that he's been working with over the years, which would be fine if they were winning, it's got the air of going through the motions about it now.

Always seems to happen, whoever the coach is and whatever sport. Southgate was the same in football, genuinely selected on form/merit, now it would actually be impossible for the likes of Maguire, Sterling etc to play badly enough for Southgate to consider dropping them.

I thinl we'll lose heavily to the Boks - can't bully them up front, so relying on the pace/creativity of the back line against a good defence.

Other issue with Eddie is that he goes through defence/attack/forwards coaches like a knife through butter. Absolutely no continuity.

World rankings have shuffled slightly after the weekend. Pleased to see we swapped places with the Argies.

England have finally dropped one-pace Nowell to the bench. I’m pleased to see Freeman start.

Mako Vunipola has been given the task of giving up scrum penalties as Genge is also benched. Not sure about a lock (Coles) at flanker but it must be said SA usually play that way.

I’d have liked to see Smith, Tuilagi Slade in the backline but we aren’t getting that from Eddie it seems

Awful negative selection again from Jones. Trying to mitigate what the Saffers will do rather than picking a side to go out there and play.

Pick players in their right positions FFS. Lock forwards at 6 DOES NOT WORK (Lawes is the exception but IMO he was never great at lock anyway - scrummaging body position all over the place). The minimal gain at lineout is not worth the cost in every other facet of the game.

Ribbans looked ace when he came on last week and he's been jumped by Coles, Simmonds was one of the few forwards that made some impact and has been replaced by a flipping lock.

Eddie needs to be gone at this point.

Any thoughts on who would best replace him (assuming that they’re available)?

No idea, but I'd take anyone who picks players on form and in position and can craft a semi-coherent gameplan

I thought EJ was your golden man just a few years ago though?

too many baffling selections, too much favouritism to players out of form and too little consideration to the value of the 6N.
