Lordy. The worst I've had was the below, which went on day two of a week's walking in Norway, with the toe and heel held together with duct tape for the rest of the trip. They were not remotely waterproof & they are the reason I always have half a metre of duct tape wound round a walking pole these days. (Probably needs refreshing now I think about it)

We only passed about 10 people all day, but I felt sure that someone would have some suitable tape. There was a couple carrying large rucksacks who were likely camping, and they were my best bet, but they didn't have anything suitable.

Before the walk, my boots had no visible signs of failing. Sometimes you get the odd nick or the front of the toe area might be coming loose. Nothing!

Anyway, I digress. Here are some other photos from the same walk:

My only warning was a faint squeak from the right boot. Squeak of Doom as it turned out.
