McG, I see on your London towpath route you went via Dartford*. Was the route under the Bridge not open at that time?

*3 miles from me. you could have stopped for a cuppa!

I was following cycle route 1 IIRC and it is particularly sketchy round there so I took an ‘official detour ‘

ah cycling, yes that makes sense. It's possible to walk along the path under the Bridge but some of it is marshland and quite difficult to follow even on foot.
